It's that glorious time of year when we reunite with loved ones (we neglected all year), stuff our faces to excess, and pass out in front of the TV. Perhaps a recalibration of the thanksometer is in order. A spin-off of the popular GivesMeHope.com site, this community invites you to document moments of kindness, generosity, and pure human love in 350 words or less.

Despite its mainstream appeal, Thanksgiving is not for everyone. There are those struggling with food disorders, for whom this day causes endless conflict. There are the cash-challenged, who can't afford the gluttony we've grown to expect. There are the lonely, who don't have loved ones nearby. And let's not forget the vegetarians, who decry the animal cruelty. But there's one more group we often overlook: the terminally lazy! This community of lazy vegetarians offers easy recipes for an animal-friendly feast.

Just in time for holiday shopping season, this fashionista community brings you the world of haute couture in the form of sumptuous photos, video clips, and candid commentary. There's also a sugary sprinkle of mainstream movie discussions and debates on such pressing social issues as manicure styles and celebrity colonics. If you need a break from the daily grind to indulge your girlie side, this is twinkly pink on steroids.

The 9 Spot: LK Madigan
[info]anywherebeyond

LK Madigan’s debut novel FLASH BURNOUT is about a boy torn between two girls- the one who loves him, and the one who needs him. We’re asking LK 9 essential questions we need to know about every author!

9. Legs or pudding?
Wow, hard question! I practice tae kwon do, so legs are pretty important, but I figure I’ll be toothless someday, so … PUDDING!

8. Jean jacket or leather jacket?
I have a lot of memories tied up in an old jean jacket my honey gave me (it was once his), so JEAN!

7. Blind faith or cold logic?
Blind faith has gotten me this far, I’ll stick with it.

6. Pen or keyboard?
Keyboard, unless I am trying to be a stealthy spy and note-taker out in the wild.

5. Zombies or unicorns?
Team Unicorn!

4. Hardback or paperback?
I’m too eager to wait for paperbacks, so HARDBACK!

3. Bookmark or fold the page?
Bookmark, of course, what was I … raised by wolves? Don’t hurt books.

2. Hoard or share?
Hoard chocolate, share unsolicited advice.

1. Happy ending or total devastation?
Happy ending, please, or – failing that – at least not total devastation.

Thanks, LK! To find out more about LK, check out her website at www.flashburnout.com!

My fabulous friend Lily is sitting next to me in the Redwood City library right now – this is the first time I have gone onto the Internet (aside from using my BlackBerry) since landing in CA on Wednesday, which I think shows a remarkable amount of restraint on my part. Lily was with me on Thursday night, when I read from POSITIVELY and signed books at Kepler’s – one of my all-time favorite bookstores. I was supremely nervous, because a bunch of people I knew from my early childhood came to hear me – including two of my old babysitters and first grade teacher! It was also the first time my dad was coming to one of my book events, though I really wasn’t nervous in front of him – he always thinks I sound good, even when I’m singing. Thank you to the incredible, inimitable Angela M. for hosting me and for the lovely introduction (and thanks especially for bringing Olivia with you).

And now Lily will help me with the recap.

Lily: It was totally awesome. My sister Marachel and I were actually the first two people to ever read POSITIVELY, but we’d never seen Courtney read in public. She was nervous, but I think she did a great job. I liked her outfit. It was really cool when Jessarae sang, and even cooler that he wrote a song just for Courtney’s book!!!

Me: Yes, that was very cool. It’s one of my favorite songs – called “Without You (It’ll Be All Right).” I didn’t even realize it was about POSITIVELY until recently, which makes me love it even more.

Lily: Also I really liked meeting your friend who’s a writer and has a book coming out next year.

Me: That’s my friend Heidi R. Kling. You need to get her book SEA as soon as it comes out – June 10, 2010.

Lily: OK, I will. You should post some pictures now.

Friday Five: Little Inspirations
[info]dreamerwrites

cross-posted form http://blog.cherylreneeherbsman.com

For today's Friday Five, I thought I'd start your weekend off with some little inspirations. The first one is sort of bittersweet, sad mixed with inspiring:

1. Check out Carrie Jones' post about "To Write Love on Her Arms". This is especially key for anyone who has experienced depression.

2. Here's a quote from Marianne Williamson that is a helpful reminder: "We can always choose to perceive things differently. You can focus on what's wrong in your life, or you can focus on what's right."

3. This quote is from Wayne Dyer: "You leave old habits behind by starting out with the thought 'I release the need for this in my life.'" The point of this one is that sometimes we want something so badly, that we grasp on too tightly, squeezing all the life out of it. Go after what you want, work for it, but don't need it. Know that you are whole with or without it.

4. "Love is not a mere sentiment, but the ultimate truth at the heart of the universe." Deepak Chopra. Speaks for itself, no?

5. Finally, the last little thought for today comes from Albert Einstein as noted in the book The Secret: "Imaginations is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions." So imagine the life you want, not the one you don't!

I hope these little tidbits help you find a little inspiration today. Enjoy your weekend!

I'll be back tomorrow with an interview with 2009 Deb Kristina Springer!

2009 Debutantes Blog Tour
[info]walkwrite
Today, please welcome the marvelous [info]lkmadigan

L.K. Madigan is a writer living in Portland, Oregon, who finds it odd to speak in the third person. Therefore:
Hi. I am married with one son, two big black dogs, hundreds of books, and a couple of beaters, I mean vintage cars.

Fifteen-year-old Blake has a girlfriend and a friend who's a girl. One of them loves him, the other one needs him.

When he snapped a picture of a street person for his photography homework, Blake never dreamed that the woman in the photo was his friend Marissa's long-lost meth addicted mom.

In a tangle of life, death, and love, Blake will emerge with a more sharply defined snapshot of loyalty.

And as for my questionnez dujour:

1. If you had a time machine and could go back to the early days of your writing career and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?

Trust that the journey will take you exactly where you’re supposed to go.

2. If you weren't a writer, what would you want to be (or what do you think you would be), career-wise?

A librarian!

3. What did you do to celebrate your book deal? Pop some champagne? Extravangant purchase? Dinner out? Pizza delivery?

My husband bought me flowers and chocolates!

And when I got my advance money, I bought a fancy pen. It feels really solid and authorial. :-)

Flowers, chocolate, and a good, solid pen. Sounds like a writer's emergency pack!

Till we meet again!

Growing as a writer
[info]mandywriter
I have to say, it is really, truly rewarding to see myself grow as a writer. And not always in the ways I'd expected.

Once upon a time, I thought revising meant using spell check and fixing punctuation. I slowly learned that's not the case, and eventually came to understand the basics. Through revising THE JETSETTER'S SOCIAL CLUB, that ill-fated novel that got me my first (and second) agent, I learned about audience, about conflicts, about dialogue tags, about how to say what you mean in six words instead of ten.

Through revising PRADA & PREJUDICE, I learned about story arcs and tension. While revising YOU WISH, I've learned about plotting, bringing each story arc together at the same moment.

At some point, I really thought all these things I was learning was going to make my first drafts better. I imagined myself penning a masterpiece, lightly revising, and consdering it fit for the world.

I've come to realize it's the opposite. The firmer my grasp becomes on this whole writing thing, the more aware of flaws I am. Instead of finishing the first draft and thinking I just have one or two things to do, I have a laundry list of things to fix. There was a time I could share a first draft and get valuable feedback. Now, I see *SO* many holes in my drafts that i know I must fix them before sending them off for feedback. I mean, would you slap paint on your house in various, random spots and then ask someone what they think of the paint job? Probably not.

I don't know I've I'll ever become a better writer. But I know I've become a better reviser. And you know what? I'd rather be a really crappy writer and a fantastic reviser than vice versa.

My point? Try not to get down about your first, second, or third draft. Know that writing is a process, not something that just happens. If you can just get to the finish line on that first draft, you'll have something to work with. Something to build and sculpt and perfect.

Resist the urge to write and then just delete everything you wrote becuase it's not good enough. First drafts don't have to be good. They just have to be *THERE*.

Say Meep, Get Suspended
[info]anywherebeyond

Say Meep, Get Suspended- that’s what Danvers High School Principal Thomas Murray declared when he discovered that students were planning a mass meeping.

And I have to say, friends, the whole article made me laugh. Of all the things those students could be doing- of all the harmful and dangerous and questionable things they could be doing- seriously. They decided they would all say meep at the same time. And then the principal decided to get foolish. He autocalled every parent to warn them that any meepery would be met with suspension.

Seriously. Say meep, get suspended.

You know what I wish now? I wish every single student in that school actually would band together for a day of nothing but meeps. Because it is harmless. It is silly. And he cannot possibly suspend everyone in school. And yes, I imagine a handful of people would get suspended until the tide turned and Principal Murray was forced to back off his ridiculous position.

But I think it would be worth it. In fact, I think it would be educational. Because what better way to learn about the historied and esteemed act of civil disobedience than to live it. In a safe, controlled environment, over an issue no smaller than free speech, but no more dangerous than some irritated adults?

To the students of Danvers High School, I salute you.

And I say meep.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Princess and the Frog!
[info]cyn2write

Ok I wasn't going to broadcast pics from my Disney Trip to the world, but I can't resist... I will show just this one.

I am so excited for Princess and the Frog to come out!  December 11, 2009!  I have been waiting for another Disney Princess movie for a long time and a movie with original Disney songs, and this one looks so adorable.

It's already my daughter's favorite bedtime story.  Plus, Tiana is gorgeous, and Prince Naveen is really, really cute. :)

Five things on a Thursday
[info]lisa_schroeder
1) Delsym cough medicine is the best. It's expensive, but worth every penny.

2) I really don't like it when men have hairy necks. If you don't want to get your hair cut very often, fine, but please, can you at least shave your neck?

3) Check out this amazing, AMAZING post about ARCs by Kristi, aka The Story Siren. She went to publicists at publishing houses and asked them some questions about ARCs, including how much an average ARC costs. Good stuff, people!

4. Taylor Swift - OMG, she won FOUR awards on the Country Music Awards last night. I can't quite decide if I want to marry Taylor Swift or BE Taylor Swift. I know I want to write books the way Taylor writes songs. Now that I'm learning to play the guitar, I'm trying to teach myself some of her songs. Teardrops on My Guitar is one I've been playing a lot.

In my dreams, I sound like this:

5. Speaking of guitar, I'm playing on the one my husband has had for about 30 years. No joke. It's fine for now, but I'm really hoping Santa might bring me a new one for Christmas. If you know guitars and have any recommendations for him, please let me know so I can pass it along. I think I'd like to try and find one that works well with my small hands. If there is such a thing!

Happy Thursday!

I love this!

Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT
[info]dwell wrote in [info]lj_maintenance
EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP.

Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!!

Thanks [info]mhwest and [info]dnewhall for helping out!

---

On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

City Secrets covered to be revealed soon!
[info]jessicaburkhart
Hey guys!

I've been getting so many awesome notes about when the cover for CITY SECRETS will be revealed. The answer? Not sure yet. It's almost done and as soon as I get the okay to post it, you know I will! I can't wait for you all to see it--it's so gorgeous and fun!

Plus, there's a twist to this book that'll make it unlike any other Canterwood book before it. :)
